OUAZ Home Win Gives Warriors First Loss

SURPRISE, Ariz. – For the second straight Saturday, the OUAZ men's basketball team gave its opponent their first loss of the season as the Spirit knocked off Westmont 75-70 in Golden State Athletic Conference play at Faith Arena.

OUAZ (7-3, 2-2 GSAC) battled through 36.1 percent shooting by turning 21 Westmont (9-1, 2-1) turnovers into 26 points. The Spirit scored 12 fast break points and tallied a 36-30 edge in the paint.

Trailing 11-4 six minutes into the game, the Spirit put together a 28-9 scoring run to open their largest lead of the game at 32-20 with 4:12 to play before halftime. OUAZ would never relinquish that advantage the rest of the afternoon despite the Warriors getting back within two on multiple occasions.

The last of those opportunities came with 3:33 remaining and the Spirit leading 62-60. OUAZ responded with seven straight points with a layup from Marcus Williams, an and-one by Kam Malbrough, and a layup by Keshawn Bruner. As Westmont was forced to foul down the stretch, OUAZ converted its final six free throws to close out its first-ever win over the Warriors.

Josiah De'laCerda led the Spirit with 20 points. He scored 10 of those during a five-minute span in the second half to help the Spirit extend its lead back to seven after Westmont had gotten within a basket. The Second straight 20-point outing from De'laCerda was his third of the season and included six rebounds.

Williams added his best effort of the season with 15 points behind 3 of 7 from beyond the arc. He also made all four of his free throws and recorded five assists. Malbrough scored 13 points with six assists and two steals.

OUAZ recovered from its 36.1 percent shooting by grabbing 19 offensive rebounds for 14 points. That helped the Spirit to a 43-42 rebounding edge and allowed them to overcome the 44.8 percent shooting by Westmont.

Cade Roth scored 24 points with five makes from deep to lead the Warriors.

The Spirit will now get ready for a Thursday game against No. 6 Arizona Christian in Faith Arena at 7 p.m.
