Spirit Hold Off Orediggers in Matinee

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Trailing at the half for just the second time this season, the OUAZ men's basketball team put together a solid second-half effort to pull out a 78-74 win over Montana Tech in a Wednesday matinee at Faith Arena.

OUAZ (8-3) scored its first 10 baskets in the paint to help them to 50 percent shooting in the game and a 48-28 advantage in paint points. The Spirit also held a 40-30 edge in rebounds by grabbing 32 of the 38 available boards at the defensive end.

The game was back-and-forth throughout and featured eight ties and 15 lead changes. A 14-5 run in the second half helped the Spirit turn a two-point deficit into a 70-63 lead with 5:19 to play. Marcus Williams delivered a pivotal moment during the run with a 3-pointer from 28-feet to beat the shot clock and the lead at two.

OUAZ capped the run with six straight points – two consecutive scores at the rim by Keshawn Bruner and a layup from Jayce Catchings – to secure the lead that the Spirit never gave back.

Those four points from Bruner were part of season-high 22 points that led the Spirit. Bruner made his first six shots and finished 9 of 11 from the game with one three. He also secured seven rebounds with a steal and a blocked shot.

Devin Collins and Josiah De'laCerda each finished with 15 points and seven rebounds. McKay Bundy led the team with nine rebounds, and Williams had nine assists.

Montana Tech (10-4) shot 44.1 percent from the field and hit nine of their 23 attempts beyond the arc, but only 1 of 9 in the second half. The Orediggers scored 22 points from 15 Spirit turnovers. Sindou Diallo led Tech with 24 points.

OUAZ has two games remaining this week at the Cactus Classic hosted at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. The first of those is Friday at 6 p.m. against Montana Western.
