OUAZ Opens Cactus Classic with 75-53 Win

CHANDLER, Ariz. – Playing its first of two games at the Cactus Classic on Friday night, the OUAZ men's basketball team delivered one of its more complete outings of the season for a 75-53 win over Montana State-Northern.

OUAZ (9-4) never trailed in the game after opening the night with a 14-5 run. With the advantage still nine with just under 13 minutes before halftime, the Spirit scored 17 consecutive points during an 8-minute stretch. During the deciding burst, MSU-Northern (9-3) missed eight straight shots – including four 3-pointers – and the Lights committed six turnovers.

The Spirit used 36 points in the paint to help them shoot 50.9 percent from the field. They also posted a 39-27 edge on the boards with 16 points from nine offensive rebounds. OUAZ held Northern to 38.6 percent shooting and just six threes on 17 attempts. They turned the Lights over 14 times and converted those possessions into 13 points.

Josiah De'laCerda shot 9 of 15 to lead the Spirit with 19 points while also grabbing a team-high seven rebounds. He scored 10 points during a 22-12 Spirit run in the second half that helped them pull away. Marcus Williams added 14 points with three makes from beyond the arc. Keshawn Bruner finished with 12 points.

Northern was led by 12 points from Mascio McCadney.

OUAZ will be back in action at the Cactus Classic on Saturday when they face Montana Western at 8 p.m. at the Coyote Center.
