Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Unfortunate Deflection Knocks Spirit from Tourney

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Looking to make a third straight run to the championship game of the GSAC Tournament, the 24th-ranked OUAZ men's soccer team was eliminated from the 2021 event with a 1-0 loss to Arizona Christian in the quarterfinals on Saturday evening at Spirit Field.

The game was pretty even through the first half and seemed headed to end with neither team getting on the board when a late foul and yellow card on OUAZ (11-4-1) in the 44th minute changed things. Nestor Serrano played the ball into the penalty area on the ensuing free-kick. It took a deflection off a Spirit defender and caromed into the goal to give Arizona Christian (11-3-2) the advantage.

Determined not to have its tourney run end that way, the Spirit would apply pressure to start the second half, and they were able to get off eight shots in the first 21 minutes of the second half. Four of those chances were on goal, with another two being blocked and none finding a way into the goal.

Misael Moreno had the best opportunity when he found the ball on his foot inside the area, but the ACU keeper was up to the challenge and turned Moreno away.

The Firestorm was able to melt away the remainder of the game without any dangerous chances from the Spirit. It ended with OUAZ holding a 14-3 edge in shot attempts with six of the Spirit's chances on goal.

Angel Ramirez recorded just one save in goal for the Spirit as he was never really tested.

OUAZ will now wait and see if their regular season performance was enough to earn an at-large invite to the NAIA National Championship when the field of 40 is announced on November 15.
