Roberts Goals Puts Men’s Soccer Into Opening Round Final

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – A program's first appearance at a national championship will always be a memorable one, but for the OUAZ men's soccer team, today will be one they won't forget for a long time. After sitting around all day waiting to play because of rain and lightning in the area, OUAZ needed just one goal to defeat No. 15 Georgia Gwinnett, 1-0, and advance to the next round.

Entering the four-team Miami Gardens Bracket as the No. 3 seed, the 25th-ranked Spirit (12-4-1) got a goal from Juaval Roberts in the 68th minute to shock the No. 2 seed Georgia Gwinnett (9-6-1). The winning tally started from a corner kick from Joaquin Bermejillo that was headed back to the center of the box by Kebba Jobe. That is where Tinashe Simbo headed toward the goal where Roberts put the final touch for his first goal of the season.

Neither team managed many quality chances throughout the evening, and Georgia Gwinnett ended with an 11-7 edge in total shots. The Grizzlies had two opportunities to even the game in the final ten minutes, but Angel Ramirez made a save on Karim Tmimi in the 82nd minute, and Jason Strambu blasted a shot wide in the 90th minute.

Ramirez finished the evening with three saves to earn his 12th win and ninth shutout of the season. Roberts led the Spirit with three total shots and two shots on goal.

With the win – one of just four by teams seeded third or fourth across the entire field on Thursday – OUAZ advances to Saturday, where they will face No. 5 St. Thomas (Fla.) at 11 a.m. (AZ).
