Spirit Ride Defense to Upset of No. 19 Lewis-Clark State and Corban Classic Title

SALEM, Ore. – Just days removed from one of the most disappointing losses in program history, the OUAZ men's basketball team used a dominating defense to upset No. 19 Lewis-Clark State 76-64 on Saturday afternoon to win the Corban Classic.

OUAZ (6-2) used a 29-9 run in the first half to open a 33-18 lead with 3:34 to play before halftime. The Spirit kept the lead in double figures the rest of the game and gave Lewis-Clark State (7-1) its first loss of the season.

While that offensive spurt played a role in the upset, the Spirit defense completed the task. OUAZ held the Warriors 35 percent shooting to hold the NAIA scoring leader 33 points below their season average. LCSC shot 9 of 30 from beyond the arc.

Kam Malbrough led the way for OUAZ with 18 points, four assists, and three steals. He scored 10 points in the second half, including seven over the final 7:20, to ensure the Spirit didn't give up the lead.

Josiah De'laCerda added 15 points and seven rebounds for the Spirit. Jayce Catchings scored 14 points off the bench, while Kolten Hitt scored 12 points.

After shooting 51.7 percent in the first half to build that lead, OUAZ ended the game at 48.0 percent. They were able to keep the lead in double digits by making 27 of 32 at the foul line and 16 of 18 in the second half. That allowed the Spirit to overcome its 1 of 8 from three.

Behind a season-high 16 rebounds from Devin Collins, OUAZ held a 38-34 edge on the boards. Collins grabbed 14 rebounds on the defensive end to help him to the second-most rebounds in his OUAZ career.

The Spirit outscored the Warriors 38-18 in the paint, and they turned the 11 LCSC turnovers into 13 points. Each team had eight second-chance points.

Colton Spencer led LCSC with 11 points.

OUAZ now returns home to play No. 17 The Master's on Thursday in Faith Arena to begin a four-game homestand.
