Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cold Spell Leads to Spirit’s Second Straight Loss

PHOENIX – For the second straight game, the OUAZ men's basketball team couldn't hold its halftime lead as the Spirit fell at Park Gilbert 73-72 on Tuesday night at the Phhacility.

OUAZ (4-2) led 40-32 at halftime, but they shot just 12 of 32 in the second half as Park Gilbert (2-6) rallied for the win. The Buccaneers lead would reach 71-62 with 2:39 to play in the second half before the Spirit went on a 10-2 run to get within one point.

The Spirit defense forced a turnover in the backcourt with 9.6 seconds to play, but Kam Malbrough's potential game-winning runner in the paint rolled off the rim as time expired.

OUAZ ended the game shooting 39.1 percent overall and 5 of 21 from beyond the arc. That included a 1 of 11 effort from three in the second half with 10 straight misses to start the period. The Spirit used 18 offensive rebounds for a 36-35 edge in total boards, but those extra chances only resulted in 12 points.

Kolten Hitt and Keshawn Bruner finished with 14 points apiece to lead the Spirit. Hitt made 6 of 8 shots and a pair of triples. Josiah De'laCerda added 12 points and eight rebounds.

Park got a game-high 19 points from Kelton Williams, and the Buccaneers shot 59.6 percent from the floor and 9 of 15 from three.

OUAZ will now head to Salem, Oregon, where they will play two games at the Corban Classic this weekend. They open the trip against the host Warriors on Friday at 3 p.m. (AZ).
