OUAZ Suffers First Loss

FULLERTON, Calif. – For the first time this season, the OUAZ men's basketball team suffered a loss as Hope International rallied for a 66-63 win over the Spirit on Saturday at Darling Pavilion.

OUAZ (4-1, 1-1 GSAC) led by as much as 11 points in the first half and was ahead by eight at halftime before Hope International (6-1, 2-0) began its comeback. The Royals used a 28-3 run to start the second half to lead 52-45 with 10:54 remaining.

The teams would then exchange scoring runs, and after Kam Malbrough sunk a pair of free throws with 2:04 to play, the Spirit had gone back in front 63-60. OUAZ went 0 for 3 the rest of the game, and Hope got a pair of threes from Anthony Garcia – the second with 1.9 seconds to play – to snap the Spirit's winning streak.

Malbrough led the Spirit with 19 points on 6 of 8 shooting. He made his first six shots in the game and hit 3 of 4 from beyond the arc. Malbrough also tallied four assists, three rebounds, and two steals.

OUAZ shot 47.8 percent from the field but only made 9 of 21 in the second half. They had a 29-26 edge in rebounds but committed 18 turnovers for 21 Royals' points. Both teams scored 26 points in the paint.

The Spirit will look to start a new streak on Tuesday when they travel across the valley to face Park Gilbert at The PHHacility.
