Spirit Show Fight in NAIA Opening Round Loss at Morningside

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The 14th-ranked OUAZ football team had a plan for No. 2 Morningside on Saturday in its First Round game of the NAIA Football Championship Series and hung around for three quarters before the Mustangs pulled away late to earn a 63-38 win.

OUAZ (8-2) attacked Morningside (11-0) through the air as quarterback Austin McCullough threw for a program-record 519 yards. He completed 61.3 percent of his 75 pass attempts to 11 different receivers as OUAZ twice rallied to take the lead after falling behind 14-0 early.

While they were throwing the ball to move down the field, the running game punched the ball into the end zone. Shamar Moreland had a pair of rushing touchdowns, while Marcelous Chester-Riley and McCullough also scored on the ground.

Brandon McLaughlin benefited from the volume of throws making 14 catches for 190 yards and a score. The 14 receptions are a new program record, while the 190 yards are the second-most at OUAZ. Ian Zamudio added eight catches for 105 yards.

After Morningside built that early advantage, the Spirit scored on six of their next seven possessions with five touchdowns. That run had OUAZ leading 38-35 with 10:14 to play in the third quarter. However, it would be the last time they would score with the remaining drives ending with a punt, blocked field goal, and three straight turnovers on downs.

OUAZ finished with 603 yards on 105 plays and 37 first downs. They converted 11 of 22 on third down and 4 of 7 on fourth down. The Mustangs accounted for 613 yards, including 253 rushing, with 32 first downs.

Morningside's Anthony Sims ran for 184 yards and three touchdowns, with Joe Dolincheck throwing for 360 yards and three scores.

Eric Holman led the Spirit with 11 tackles. De'Andre Armstrong and Brandon Tomerlin Jr. added 10 tackles each.
