Spirit Run Away from Hawks in GSAC Opener

EL CAJON, Calif. – Fresh off its most successful conference season in program history, the OUAZ men's basketball team opened the new GSAC year with an impressive 79-48 win at San Diego Christian on Thursday night.

OUAZ (4-0, 1-0 GSAC) never trailed in recording its largest margin of victory in a conference game in program history. The Spirit shot 56.9 percent from the field – including 70.8 percent in the second half – while scoring 32 points in the paint and hitting seven threes.

Josiah De'laCerda led the Spirit with 24 points by hitting 9 of 11 shots and converting all five trips at the foul line. He scored 16 points in the first half to help OUAZ to a 35-23 halftime advantage. De'laCerda also grabbed six rebounds to go with two steals, and one blocked shot.

The Spirit defense held San Diego Christian (0-4, 0-1) to 35.2 percent shooting and 5 of 18 from deep. OUAZ also forced the Hawks into 22 turnovers which resulted in 24 points. SDCC did have a 34-29 edge in rebounds behind a 10-1 difference in offensive boards.

Jayce Catchings added 18 points off the bench for the Spirit and went 3 of 5 from beyond the arc. Devin Collins led the team with eight rebounds, and Kolten Hitt had four assists.

OUAZ maintained that 13-point halftime advantage throughout most of the second half, and it remained that difference with 6:45 to play. The Spirit then scored 18 consecutive points to close the game on a 23-5 run for the final margin.

Cameron Dashiell led the Hawks in scoring with eight points.

The Spirit now head north, where they will face Hope International on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Darling Pavilion in Fullerton, California.
