Late Goal Puts Spirit in 1-0 Deficit at NAIA Championship Series

IRVINE, Calif. – The first game of the NAIA Men's Water Polo Championship Series was a back-and-forth affair that saw both teams go on runs before Westcliff scored in the final seconds for a 10-9 win over OUAZ on Wednesday afternoon.

Westcliff took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-3 series when Callum Norman scored with four seconds to play. The goal spoiled a rally from OUAZ as the Spirit had come back from an 8-4 deficit to tie the game at 9-9 with 1:14 remaining.

Jonathan Wong was the catalyst for the Spirit rally, with seven of the team's nine goals on the day. James Martin and Charles Campbell had the other two goals for OUAZ. Tristin D'Ambrosi picked up a pair of assists.

OUAZ held a 28-25 advantage in total shots, with 20 of those attempts on goal. Clay Gyde made eight saves in goal for the Spirit.

The Spirit will need to win Thursday's game two to force a decisive game three on Friday.
