OUAZ Ends with Split of Weekend Series after Falling to No. 9 Master’s in OT

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Despite a tough afternoon shooting the ball, the OUAZ men's basketball team was able to get Saturday's game to overtime before No. 9 The Master's earned a weekend split with an 83-78 win in Faith Arena.

OUAZ (8-2, 3-1 GSAC) trailed for much of the day, but they found a way back from 12 down with 13:41 to play to take a 68-66 lead with 22 seconds left on a pair of free throws from Kam Malbrough. The Master's (9-1, 1-1) was able to force overtime on a jumper in the key from Jordan Starr with two seconds on the clock.

The overtime was a struggle for the Spirit as they missed their first six shots and were quickly down seven. They would get the deficit to three twice in the final minute, but the Mustangs converted 11 of 13 free throws in the extra period, including the final four attempts.

After shooting 50 percent on Friday night, OUAZ made just 38.2 percent in defeat. They were 10 of 36 from beyond the arc and missed their final five attempts from deep, including three in overtime. It was a season-low eight turnovers and 12 offensive rebounds that allowed the Spirit to stay in the game.

Malbrough finished with a team-best 23 points on a 7 of 13 shooting performance. He hit 4 of 8 from three while adding four rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

OUAZ held a 42-40 edge in rebounds, but they were outscored 46-26 in the paint and only had eight fast break points.

Quentin Guliford had 15 points with Kolten Hitt scoring 13. Devin Collins grabbed 18 rebounds – tied for second-most in program history – and dished five assists.

TMU shot 50.8 percent from the field. Johnny McWilliams led the Mustangs with 23 points.

The Spirit will now get set to travel to Rocklin, California, where they will play a two-game series at William Jessup next Friday and Saturday.
