Balanced Effort Leads OUAZ to Upset of No. 9 Master’s

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Playing shorthanded and without its head coach, the OUAZ men's basketball team secured a 96-68 win over No. 9 The Master's on Friday night at Faith Arena to run its winning streak to five straight.

OUAZ (8-1, 3-0 GSAC) has now won two straight games over ranked opponents and four of its last five dating back to last season. This is the team's second consecutive win over a top-10 ranked Master's (8-1, 0-1) squad after the Spirit snapped the Mustangs 47-game home court winning streak.

Down 4-0 in the opening minutes on Friday, OUAZ would score 13 of the game's next 15 points to build an early advantage that they never relinquished. The Spirit would build the lead to 18 by halftime with multiple runs and holding the visitors to consecutive scores just once over the final 18:47 of the half.

Dane Maggii anchored the Spirit all night and led the team with 21 points, 12 rebounds, and five assists. He made 7 of 15 shots and added two steals and one block in his first double-double of the season.

OUAZ ended the game shooting 50 percent from the floor and they went 10 of 29 from beyond the arc. They turned 22 Mustangs' turnovers into 25 points and tallied 24 fast break points. The Spirit held a 43-30 edge on the glass with 11 points from 14 offensive rebounds.

Four others joined Maggii on double figures in the win. Kam Malbrough scored 18 points with four assists while Stephon Bell added a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds. Kolten Hitt posted 13 points and Devin Collins had 12 points.

Master's shot 42.6 percent with 36 points in the paint. Davian Brown led the Mustangs with 23 points off the bench.
