Championship Central NCCAA Men's Volleyball National Invitational

The OUAZ men's volleyball team will open its 2021 season this weekend at the NCCAA National Invitational in Winston-Sale, North Carolina. OUAZ makes its third trip in as many years to the event as the No. 3 seed after playing for the title – and winning in 2019 – in each of its first two appearances.

The Spirit will open the event against No. 5 seed Maranatha Baptist on Friday at 2:30 p.m. (AZ). They close pool play against top-seeded Erskine on Saturday at 7 a.m. (AZ). Once the pool play matches, the pools will play a crossover match on Saturday with the championship scheduled for 5 p.m. (AZ) that evening.

OUAZ begins its new season after going 13-5 in 2020 before the season was canceled. The Spirit were the last OUAZ team to play a game last spring. When the season ended, OUAZ was 6-4 in GSAC play and in fourth place.

In two trips to the NCCAA Championship, OUAZ has compiled a 7-1 record and the Spirit won the 2019 title. They were one point away from repeating as champions last season before Campbellsville rallied to spoil the repeat bid. Only twice in the eight matches played at the event has OUAZ seen the match go more than three sets.

Last season, OUAZ ranked 13th in the NAIA by averaging 12.26 kills per set while hitting .239 to rank 16th in the country. They also placed 15th nationally by posting 1.44 service aces per set as a team.

Quaid King will lead the Spirit into 2021 after a freshman campaign that saw him finish 15th in the NAIA at 3.71 kills per set. King posted double-digit kills in 12 of the 17 matches he played while hitting .259 for the season.

Blake Music returns this season after hitting .370 last season to rank 19th in the country. Music also led the team with an average of 0.82 blocks per set which was good for 41st nationally.

OUAZ also gets back 2019 starting setter Andrew de'Leon after the senior missed all of last season. Two seasons ago, de'Leon averaged 8.54 assists and 1.39 digs and his 1,316 career assists are the most in program history.

Friday's match against Maranatha Baptist is the second all-time meeting between the two programs. The first was a 3-0 sweep by the Spirit during pool play of last year's NCCAA tournament. OUAZ will face Erskine for the first time when they meet on Saturday morning.

Campbellsville is the only other team in the field that OUAZ has played with the Spirit holding a 2-1 lead in the series. The last two meetings have come in the NCCAA Championship Match.
