OUAZ Grinds Out Road Win in Conference Opener

SAN DIMAS, Calif. – On a night they struggled to find much offense, the OUAZ men's basketball team put together a gritty effort to earn a 57-43 road win over Life Pacific in the season's Golden State Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Friday night.

OUAZ (6-1, 1-0 GSAC) entered the game ranked 25th in the NAIA by scoring nearly 88 points per game, but they struggled to score and had limited possessions on Friday. With the tempo out of their hands, OUAZ took to the defensive end to get the victory.

Trailing by four at intermission, the Spirit held Life Pacific (0-1, 0-1) to just 14 points on five second half baskets. After the Warriors made their first shot of the half, OUAZ went on a 19-4 run in which they got nine points from Kam Malbrough and saw LPU go 2 of 14 from the field.

Malbrough led all players in the game with 14 points in 36 minutes off the bench. He hit on 6 of 13 from the floor with five rebounds and one assist.

The Spirit shot 39.1 percent as a team and converted just 5 of 23 from beyond the arc. They had a 43-35 edge in rebounds and turned seven offensive rebounds into 11 points.

Devin Collins added a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds in his Spirit debut.

Life Pacific ended the night shooting 26.3 percent and 7 of 33 from deep. The Warriors missed their final 11 attempts from 3-point range. Adam Saavedra the team with 12 points.

The 57 points are the fewest an OUAZ team has scored in a win in the program's history. This is also the first time the Spirit has started GSAC play 1-0.

OUAZ and Life Pacific will complete their two-game series on Saturday when they tip at 2 p.m. (AZ) at Mehl Court.
