Spirit Never Trail in 92-60 Win over Warriors

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Coming off its first loss of the season on Saturday afternoon, the OUAZ men's basketball team got back to its winning ways with a 92-60 win over SAGU American College on Tuesday night at Faith Arena.

OUAZ (4-1) never trailed as they shot 51.4 percent from the field with 48 points in the paint in the win. They held SAGU (0-8) to just 34.8 percent shooting and just 4 of 24 from beyond the arc. The Spirit made eight of their 24 attempts from three and totaled 18 fast break points.

The game was even at 18-18 with 12:27 to play before halftime when OUAZ closed the half on a 29-11 run to lead 47-29 at the break. They then made sure there wasn't going to be any type of second half rally with 12 straight points late in the second half that included dunks from Elijah Simmons and Kolten Hitt.

Hitt sparked the OUAZ offense much of the night with a season-high 19 points. He made 7 of 10 from the field and both of his attempts from three. His night also included six rebounds and three steals.

Kam Malbrough provided the team's first double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 assists in 29 minutes off the bench. Josiah De'laCerda scored 15 points with nine rebounds and Simmons had 13 points.

OUAZ was solid on the glass all evening with a 59-29 advantage in rebounds, including 20 offensive rebounds that they turned into 22 second-chance points. The Spirit had a season-high 26 assists while committing 18 turnovers.

Quentin Guliford led the Spirit with 10 rebounds. Dane Maggii had 10 points.

Darren Jones led the Warriors with 20 points and eight rebounds.

The Spirit will look to avenge their first loss of the season on Wednesday night when they welcome Benedictine Mesa back to Faith Arena at 7 p.m.
