GLENDALE, Ariz. – The OUAZ baseball team picked up another doubleheader split with Arizona Christian on Saturday as the teams wrapped up their GSAC series at Apollo High School. OUAZ took the first game 14-3 before Arizona Christian came back to win the second game 7-4.
With the split, OUAZ is now 8-15 on the season and 5-8 in conference play. Arizona Christian moves to 18-9 overall and 6-6 in the GSAC.
GAME 1
OUAZ took advantage of six ACU errors while recording 13 hits to score double digits for the second straight game. The Spirit scored at least three runs in an inning three times, including the four-run sixth.
Elijah Celaya drove in three runs while
Adrian Salazar and
Kobie Tinsley had two RBI apiece. Tinsley also scored three times while going 2 for 2 at the plate with a double.
Hunter Parks had three hits with one double.
Ben Lewis went 2 for 5 with a double and two RBI.
Dylan Chelini took a no decision on the mound after giving up three runs on five hits in 4.2 innings.
Anthony Quattrocchi (2-2) shut the Firestorm down with 4.1 shutout innings and giving up just two hits to earn the win in relief.
GAME 2
ACU struck for four runs in the bottom of the second and never looked back. Down 7-0 after four, the Spirit began to chip away and would get the tying run to the plate in the seventh before the Firestorm worked out of the jam.
Johnny Cherpak led the Spirit offense with two of the team's five hits while scoring a pair of runs.
Nolan Girard knocked in a pair if runs with a double in the fifth inning. Tinsley also had an RBI in the game.
Travis Turner (0-1) took the loss for the Spirit after giving up three runs in 1.1 innings.
Juan Navarrete worked on scoreless inning and
Shane Flaningam pitched two scoreless frames.
LOOKING AHEAD
OUAZ will be back in action on Wednesday when they face Park Gilbert in a non-conference game.
