SURPRISE, ARIZ. - Saturday at the final day of the 2020 OUAZ Invitational provided the Spirit softball team a chance to push its record four games over .500. It was not to be for the revamped OUAZ squad, as a lack of offense in the morning and costly defensive miscues in the afternoon saw the Spirit drop both games on Saturday.
(25)Marymount (Calif.) 7, OUAZ 0 – Less than 24 hours after the Mariners gave up a single hit to the Spirit, its pitching staff was once again able to limit OUAZ to a single base knock in the first game for OUAZ.
Samantha Miller's infield single in the fifth was the only thing that kept Haley Marschall from a no-hitter.
Alexandria McCutcheon struck out seven batters in 4.2 innings in relief of starter
Phoebe Popplewell. Combined both pitchers struck out ten Mariner batters, and McCutcheon did not allow a walk.
Northwest (Wash.) 5, OUAZ 3 – The Spirit were able to get out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the first thanks to a
Briana Tucker single,
Heliana Bueno beating out a potential double play attempt at first, and Kaitlyn Chambers reaching on an error. After the big inning early, OUAZ had only three more hits in the final six innings.
The lead lasted until the top of the fifth, where the Spirit were one out away from ending the inning, until an error at first started rally for the Eagles. After a Nicola Fish single, Jessica Nunes tripled, and scored on an error to tie the game.
Northwest took the lead after Alexis Contreras reached on an error and advanced to second, scoring Hannah Jorgensen in the process. Contreras was driven in by Nashoni Boyd to give the Eagles a 5-3 lead. The Spirit were able to load the bases in the seventh, but could not cash in, sealing the team's fourth loss in six games.
Bailey Coronado was saddled with the loss despite not giving up an earned run. Popplewell pitched the first five innings, and not of the runs she surrendered were earned as well.
The Spirit will continue its non-conference stretch when they host Embry Riddle Aeronautical University for a doubleheader next Friday. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 5:00pm.
