OUAZ Sweeps Park, Nearly Pulls Another Upset in Final Day of Spirit Classic

SURPRISE, ARIZ. – Friday provided another opportunity for the OUAZ softball team to pick up consecutive wins over a ranked opponent. While the Spirit were unable to hang on against 19th-ranked College of Idaho, the did pick up its fourth victory in the nightcap over Park-Gilbert.

(19) College of Idaho 4, OUAZ 3

The Yotes found the early lead in the first inning thanks to a Trystin Crofts RBI triple to center in which she scored on the same play after a throwing error from Jorden Jefferson. The center fielder made up for her mistake in the bottom of the second, as Jefferson drilled a two-run single into center field to tie the game.

Heliana Bueno drew a pinch-hit, bases-loaded walk to give OUAZ the lead in the bottom of the fourth, but the Spirit could not get any more on the board from that situation. Andrea McCutcheon was one out away from the win before Kylie Smith hit a two-RBI double to left center to give the Yotes the lead. OUAZ got two runners on base but were unable to push them across and dropped just its second game of the season.

The Spirit's Avery Bohn and Cherish Paolinelli had two-hit games, and Paolinelli came around to score once. Patience in the lineup showed again for OUAZ, as they drew five walks and only stuck out four times as a team.
Phoebe Popplewell pitched a near-spotless three innings in relief of starter Bailey Coronado. Popplewell only allowed two hits and a walk to put the Spirit in a good spot during the later innings.

OUAZ 12, Park-Gilbert 7

The offense was rolling for OUAZ in the showcase finale, as they brought across 12 runs on 14 hits. Dreya Rhinehart went 3 for 5, and scored four runs in her chances on base. Mashayla Beltran and Bohn each had 3 RBIs to go along with their multi-hit performances. Paolinelli's bat stayed hot, as she went 2 for 3 with two RBIs to add to her impressive totals from earlier in the day.

McCutcheon had a better time in the circle, as she struck out seven batters without issuing a free pass and only allowed five hits in 5.0 innings. She was credited for the win, her second of the season.

The Spirit will have a week off before hosting another showcase, the 2020 OUAZ Spring Invitational. It will feature OUAZ and four other teams on Feb. 14 and 15. For more information on the event, visit ouazspirit.com
