Spirit Pull Away from Saints for 2-0 Start

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Less than 24 hours after starting a new season with a win for the first time in program history, the OUAZ men's basketball team made it two straight as they defeated Randall University 94-81 in its second game of the ACU Fultz Classic.
 
It was once again a dominate second half that helped OUAZ (2-0) get the victory as they shot 71.9 percent after the break to pull away for the win. They took control of the game with a 19-2 run that covered five minutes over the end of the first half and the start of the second. During the spurt, the Spirit hit 8 of 10 shots and forced four turnovers.
 
That strong second half shooting helped the Spirit end that game at 57.6 percent to finish above 50 percent for the second straight game. They also made 11 of 25 from beyond the arc – 8 of 12 in the second half – and tallied 16 assists.
 
After scoring 26 points on Friday night, Josiah De'laCerda dropped another 21 points to lead the team on Saturday. He hit 9 of 13 shots and while grabbing six rebounds to tie for the team lead. He made six of his final seven attempts from the field.
 
All five OUAZ starters scored in double figures in the win. Marcus Williams finished with 18 points – including four three-pointers – and Kolten Hitt added 16 points. Kam Malbrough scored 13 points with five assists and Elijah Simmons scored 12 points.
 
Randall (0-3) ended the day shooting 48.6 percent from the field and went just 6 of 20 from beyond the arc. OUAZ forced the Saints into 14 turnovers and had a 36-35 edge in rebounds. Malik Martin led the team with 19 points off the bench.
 
OUAZ now gets set for a trip across town to face SAGU American Indian College on November 7 at 7 p.m.
