Spirit Shake Layoff, Warriors for Third Straight Win to Open Season

SURPRISE, Ariz. – A layoff of 39 days didn't slow the OUAZ men's basketball team as the picked up an 85-74 win over SAGU American Indian College on Thursday night in the home opener for the Spirit.
 
OUAZ (3-0) only trailed 2-0 and would eventually push the lead to 19 in the second half before SAGU (0-4) made a late charge to cut into the final deficit. The Spirit had five players score in double figures and made 11 three-pointers to win their fifth straight game dating back to last season.
 
After SAGU had the Spirit lead to six early in the second half, OUAZ mounted a 21-8 run over a 9-minute span to build a 60-41 cushion with 9:41 to play. During the run, OUAZ held the visiting Warriors to 3 of 20 shooting and empty on nine attempts from beyond the arc.
 
Kam Malbrough led the Spirit with 25 points by making 14 of 16 at the foul line while adding three makes from beyond the arc. He added four assists, four rebounds, and three steals
 
OUAZ finished the night 11 of 26 from three marking the first time in program history they made 10-plus threes in a game in three straight outings. The Spirit shot 47.3 percent from the field and 22 of 28 (78.6 percent) at the foul line.
 
Marcus Williams added 14 points and three assists for the Spirit. Josiah De'laCerda finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. Kolten Hitt scored 11 points and Daniel Hayes provide 10 off the bench.
 
SAGU had a 44-40 edge in rebounds with 16 offensive boards. Richard Serrano led the Warriors with 16 points. Each team committed 18 turnovers with OUAZ getting 19 assists and blocking five shots.
 
Next on the schedule for the Spirit is a trip across the valley to face Park Gilbert on December 17.
