ROCKLIN, Calif. – The OUAZ women's volleyball team began its trip to northern California with a 3-1 loss at William Jessup on Friday evening in Golden State Athletic Conference action.
OUAZ (2-8, 1-6 GSAC) had one of its better offensive nights of the season as a team, but they couldn't match the output from William Jessup (6-7, 3-3) in the Warriors' 25-21, 28-26, 24-26, 25-12 victory. The Spirit recorded a season-high 53 kills only to see the home side finish with 56 kills.
Avie Butsko led the way for OUAZ with 18 kills to set a new season high for any Spirit player. She committed only one hitting error to finish with a .486 hitting night. This is the fourth time this season Butsko has had at least 10 kills in a match.
Following Butsko's lead, the Spirit had 11, 19, and 17 kills in the first three sets respectively. They were held to just six kills in the final set as WJU raced out to a 15-4 lead in the only set that wasn't competitive.
Sharron Wallace and
Austin Edwards had nine kills apiece for the Spirit while
Katie Defer added eight.
Kanoe Vinoya distributed 37 assists in helping the team to a .226 hitting night.
Each team finished the match with two blocks and 81 digs. The Warriors held a 9-4 advantage in service aces.
Leni Bartley had a match-high 35 digs for the Spirit. That is the most by an OUAZ player this season and the third-most in program history. Vinoya added 10 digs for her fourth double-double of the season while also leading the way with three aces.
OUAZ will close their weekend in California on Saturday when they face Menlo at noon in Atherton.
