OUAZ got a chance at another quality in-state rival on Friday night, and they were able to pick up the same result they did Wednesday.
The Spirit scored three goals in the second half to propel them to a 3-1 victory over Embry-Riddle.
Jordan Riley got the scoring started in the 54', and
Cristian Gennaro added his team-leading tenth goal of the season. Mason Laaksonen got the Eagles on the board a little under six minutes later. The Spirit held off a late push from Embry-Riddle, and
Edoardo Venutolo picked up a goal with two seconds to go.
Earlier in the week, OUAZ head coach
Matt Gow mentioned that he wanted to see his team be better defensively. Despite allowing a goal, Gow thought his team was stingier on the back end.
"I thought that we did a better job defensively tonight," Gow said. "Their goal came from a set piece getting lumped into the box. So as far as run of play goes, I thought we did a good job of keeping them out of the area as the game went along."
Friday's matchup was the last one before the Spirit start Golden State Athletic Conference play on October 3. OUAZ will play in plenty of tough matches, and this next week off is an opportunity to get ready for the grind ahead.
"We're going to take a little bit of a breather," Gow said. "We're going to give the guys a few days off. We're going to allow them to get into the training room…just to try and get them back."
OUAZ kicks off conference play against San Diego Christian. The game is scheduled to start at 8:00pm at Spirit Field. Â
