In order to take the next step, OUAZ men's soccer wanted to improve in Golden State Athletic Conference play. If Thursday night was any indication, the program is well on its way to meeting that goal.
The Spirit's offense continued to roll as they defeated San Diego Christian 7-2 on Thursday. Forward
Samuel George led the way offensively with three goals and two assists. His eight points in a game broke a school record previously held by George and
Bryan Hernandez.
George was not the only Spirit player to have a multi-point night. Josais Cruz and
Cristian Gennaro each recorded a goal and an assist. Â
Misael Moreno and
Devin Fuentes netted a goal as well.
The match did not start the way OUAZ was hoping, as an own goal crossed past
Yuri Nascimento in the 6'. It did not take long for the Spirit to get the goal back, as George found the back of the net a little over 10 minutes later.
"I think we have a mature group to where they just said 'that's a freak thing, let's get over it'," Spirit head coach
Matt Gow said. "Their play spoke for itself in the beginning of the game."
Gow had talked after the last game about how he wanted to see his team tighten up defensively heading into GSAC play. While the scoreboard showed two goals in the Eagles' column, Gow was happy with the performance on the back end.
"The communication was much better," Gow said. "We were much more organized, more patient defensively. We spent that 13 days [off] really tightening that part of our game up and it really showed tonight."
OUAZ gets right back into conference play on Saturday when they host Hope International. Kickoff from Spirit Field is scheduled for 8 p.m.
