Spirit Head to California for Two GSAC Matches

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ women's volleyball team continues Golden State Athletic Conference play this weekend with the team's first road matches of the season. The Spirit begin the trip on Friday at 5 p.m. at Hope International before playing at Life Pacific on Saturday at noon.

Live video will be available for both matches on the OUAZ Game Central portal. Live stats will also be in the portal for Friday's match. Links for all live features are available at OUAZSpirit.com/live.

OUAZ makes the trip at 0-3 overall this season and 0-2 in the GSAC after dropping two conference matches against ranked opponents at home last weekend. They are coming off a 2018 season that saw the team finish 7-9 on the road and 10-11 in all games away from home.

The Spirit are currently averaging 9.10 kills per set and hitting .102 as a team. They average 1.50 service aces per set overall and are fourth in the GSAC by posting 1.86 aces per set in GSAC matches. The team also records 12.10 digs and 0.80 blocks per set.

Katie Defer leads the team with 17 kills and she is seventh in the conference by hitting .227. Stevie Wenzel has added 15 kills while Avie Butsko and Austin Edwards have 13 apiece.

Sierra Dominguez has a team-high 31 assists with Kanoe Vinoya recording 23 assists. Vinoya has six aces to lead the team and she leads the GSAC by averaging 0.86 aces per set.

Defensively, Leni Bartley leads the Spirit with 40 digs and ranks ninth in the conference at 4.00 digs per set. Butsko has a team-leading seven blocks and her 1.00 blocks per set in sixth in the GSAC.

OUAZ is 1-2 all-time against Hope International and 0-1 in Fullerton. The team split their two meetings last season – each winning at home – with the Spirit falling in five sets on the road last October.

Against Life Pacific, the Spirit hold a 2-1 all-time lead after sweeping the two matches last year. OUAZ is 1-1 in road matches in the series after winning in four sets last season after falling in five sets in 2017.
