Spirit Set Tone for New Season with 48-7 Win at Doane

CRETE, Neb. – The second season of OUAZ football got off to a flying start on Thursday night as the Spirit went into Al Papik Field at defeated Doane University 48-7.

It was all OUAZ from the start as they scored 24 points in the first quarter and outgained the Tigers 252-29. The Spirit held the home team to just one first down for the first 23 minutes and they would eventually lead 34-0 at halftime.
 
The Spirit ended the night with 567 yards of offense with 443 coming through the air. Austin McCullough threw for 426 yards and three scores on 37 of 62 passing. His main target was Richard Montello who finished with eight catches for 166 yards and one score in his collegiate debut.
 
Shamar Moreland dazzled again for the Spirit with a rushing touchdown, a receiving touchdown, and a 94-yard kickoff return for a score. He totaled 183 all-purpose yards and led the Spirit with 56 yards rushing.
 
The Spirit defense dominated Doane for most of the night in holding the Tigers to 186 total yards and only nine first downs. The Tigers got 67 of those yards on their one scoring drive late in the fourth quarter.
 
OUAZ forced three turnovers, including an interception from Christian Woo, and they forced Doane into 10 punts. Amare Burks and Justin Barnett led the team with six tackles apiece. Christian Viville had both of OUAZ's sacks.
 
After starting the season with a win for the second straight year, OUAZ now gets sets for the home opener on September 7 when they welcome Western New Mexico to Spirit Field.
