Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Spirit Rally to Win in Double OT Over Southwest

SURPRISE, ARIZ. - The OUAZ women's soccer team knew that their next game was not going to be as easy as the first. It was expected to be a much closer result than 11-0, but it nearly was a result that did not end in the Spirit's favor.

McKenzie Kienast scored in the 86' to tie the game, and Sarah Inafuku scored her second of the game on a penalty in double overtime to give OUAZ the 3-2 win over University of the Southwest Thursday night. It was a game where the Spirit struggled at times, but they found their game at the right time.

"I am really proud of the way they came back," OUAZ head coach Skelly Kellar said. "I think we showed a lot of character in the comeback."

Krysten Caballero did not make a save on the first two shots of the game, but she recovered to finish with a strong night. She finished with four saves, and they came at key times.

"I thought Krysten made some really big saves down the stretch," Kellar said. "She did a great job of getting big and coming off her line at times, and making the saves she shouldn't necessarily make. She had a couple of saves that were picturesque."

The game-tying goal game came on the final corner kick in a sequence of three straight. Inafuku set the ball far post, and Kienast put a header past the Mustangs keeper. It was a goal that came as a relief and broke some offensive frustration.

"I felt like we were close, and finally we had it," Kellar said. "The keeper stepped too far and too high, and missed it, and Kinzie was there to knock it in. So it was a great first goal for her to get her off and going."

Haley Howard drew the game winning penalty kick who went hard after a loose ball. Southwest goalkeeper Andrea Martinez drilled Howard in the box, and was awarded a penalty. Howard made a gutsy play, and it did not go unnoticed.

"As a coach, you ask your players to put the body on the line, and she did just that," Kellar said. "She was brave, she headed the ball, the goalie comes in and cleans her out, we get a PK, we go home victors."

The Spirit finish up their opening homestand when they take on Oregon Tech on Monday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm.
