Women's Soccer Finishes Opening Homestand with Two Matchups

SURPRISE, ARIZ. - In an 11-0 win, it can be easy to chalk it up as a great offensive performance. The harder part is finding specifically what was important from the game, but OUAZ women's soccer head coach Skelly Kellar was able to pick out those details.

"I feel like we did a good job of executing," Kellar said. "I was proud of the girls, they kept competing. We scored goals in a lot of different ways."

While finding unique was to score may not seem like a big deal, scoring the same way each time can really hurt the way a team attacks in future games.

"If you score the same goal every single time, then teams will recognize that and try to cut that out," Kellar said. "They'll try to but their best player on your best player."

Not only did the goals come in different ways, they came from different players too. Ten different Spirit members found the back of the net, five being freshmen. The challenge of getting young players into games is ever present, but OUAZ was able to get the newcomers much needed experience.

"It was really good to see them grow, get their feet wet, and to get some nerves out going into the season," Kellar said.

The Spirit will play two games in five days; On Thursday, they take on University of the Southwest at 5:30PM. On Monday, August 26, they will face Oregon Tech at 7PM. Both games are at Spirit Field.

AGAINST THE OPPOSITION
OUAZ has faced University of the Southwest once all-time. The Spirit topped the Mustangs 3-1 on August 23 last season.

Monday will be the first matchup between the Spirit and the Oregon Tech Owls.

NOTIABLE QUOTEABLE
"We've been really excited about this class. We think it is a very talented class. But I think the rest of the group is a talented group in itself. We had a great season last year… so I am excited to see how these new kids come into the group and make a difference." – Kellar, when talking about the freshmen class and how they are fitting in with the returners.

SPIRIT NOTES
With Saturday's win, the Spirit improve their record to 2-1 in season openers. The other win came in the first game in program history, a 2-1 win over Arizona Christian in 2017.

Paige Murray-Hernandez recorded her first career multi-goal game Saturday, moving her career goal total to eight.

Fourteen different players recorded at least one point, and 17 players got at least one shot on goal.

Five different freshmen scored, and seven total first-year players found themselves with at least a goal or an assist in the season opener.

UP NEXT
The Spirit opens the road portion of its schedule when they travel to Oregon to take on Warner Pacific and Corban. OUAZ takes on Warner Pacific on August 30 in Portland, and will finish the two game swing in Salem on September 1 against Corban.
