SURPRISE, Ariz. - Park University set a milestone in their program by playing their first game against OUAZ on Saturday. The Spirit set a program record of their own in the process.
Eight different players found the back of the net in OUAZ's season-opening 14-0 win over the Buccaneers.
Mauricio Ochoa and
Edoardo Venutolo each had a hat trick, and
Samuel George and
Cristian Gennaro added two apiece.
Yuri Nascimento only had to make one save for his fourth career OUAZ shutout.
The 14 goals scored Saturday is the most in one game in school history. The previous record was 11 when the Spirit defeated Providence Christian College on September 6, 2018.
The score got out of hand early, the Spirit were up 8-0 at halftime, but head coach
Matt Gow thought his team did a good job of staying focused for all 90 minutes.
"It's in the DNA of OUAZ is to play hard for 90 minutes," Gow said. "Every minute of the game, we need to be us, and play us, and do us."
"Games like that are always hard to keep the speed of play up high. I was proud of the guys. They moved the ball, they stayed to who we are. We didn't have too much selfish play, which can happen in some games like (tonight)."
While it is difficult to reflect on what can improve in a game like Saturday's, Gow wants to see his team be more talkative as they move forward.
"It's early in the season, so it's really easy to get on different pages," Gow said. "But the fastest way to get on the same page is to raise the communication, so I'm going to encourage these guys to raise that conversation they're having between themselves on the field."
The Spirit are back in action on Thursday, August 22 when they take on Westcliff. First touch from Spirit Field is scheduled for 8pm.
