MOBILE, Ala. – The OUAZ men's tennis team won the pool at the 2019 NCCAA Men's Tennis National Championship after defeating Cedarville 5-0 on Wednesday at the Mobile Tennis Center.
OUAZ (14-7) was the only team to finish the pool undefeated and they will enter Thursday's championship dual as the top-seed.
For the third straight day the Spirit used doubles to open an early lead. On Wednesday, they swept all three doubles matches for the first time this week.
Austin Todd and
Jordan Petrie got it started with an 8-2 win in the No. 3 match.
Eric De Romas and
Noel Maurin followed with an 8-2 win in the No. 2 match and then
Eduardo Couto and
Andres Reyes took the No. 1 match 8-5.
Just two points from clinching, OUAZ got a 6-2, 6-1 win from Petrie in the No. 6 singles match. E.Couto then clinched the dual by winning the No. 1 match 6-2, 6-2.
The Spirit will face Campbellsville in the championship dual on Thursday at 8 a.m. (Arizona). They defeated the Tigers 5-3 on Monday to start pool play. Campbellsville was the No. 1 seed to start the tournament and they are ranked No. 18 in the current NAIA poll.
