MOBILE, Ala. – The OUAZ men's tennis team saw its run for the program's first national championship come one win short as they fell to Campbellsville 5-1 in the championship dual of the 2019 NCCAA Men's Tennis National Championship on Thursday at the Mobile Tennis Center.
OUAZ ends its season at 14-8 overall and the NCCAA runner-up. The result is an amazing turnaround for the second-year program that finished 2-8 last year.
After holding a lead after doubles action in every dual they played at the tournament entering the day, the Spirit only tallied one of the three on Thursday to trail 2-1 entering singles matches. That point came from
Eduardo Couto and
Andres Reyes with their 8-4 win in the No. 1 match.
Needing to win four of the singles matches, OUAZ dropped the first set in all six to start play.
Leonardo Couto and
Noel Maurin were able to get their matches to a third set, but they wouldn't be a factor as Campbellsville – the tournament's top seed and 18th-ranked team in the NAIA – won matches No. 2, No. 5, and No. 1 to clinch the title for a second straight season.
After the match, the NCCAA announced that E.Couto and Reyes were named to the All-Tournament Team for singles and doubles.
