PHOENIX – The OUAZ men's tennis team brought their regular season to a close with maybe the biggest win in the young history of the program as they upset No. 12 Arizona Christian 7-2 to hand their crosstown rivals their first loss of the season.
OUAZ (9-6, 6-4 GSAC) began the upset with three point in doubles play. It started with
Austin Todd and
Jordan Petrie earning an 8-5 win in the No. 3 match.
Eduardo Couto and
Andres Reyes followed with an 8-6 win in the No. 1 match and then the doubles sweep was concluded when
Leonardo Couto and
Noel Maurin took the No. 2 match 9-8 (4).
When singles play began, L.Couto gave the Spirit a 4-0 lead when he closed the No. 3 match with a 6-1, 6-3 victory. Arizona Christian (15-1, 9-1) came back with wins in the No. 2 and No. 4 matches to trim the Spirit lead to 4-2.
The Spirit clinched the upset in the No. 5 singles match when Todd won his match 6-4, 6-4. E.Couto would win the No. 1 match 6-3, 6-7 (2), 1-0 (7) and then
Dong Hyun Kim added the final point with a 7-5, 6-4 win in the No. 6 match.
With the win, OUAZ has locked up a third-place finish in the inaugural season in the GSAC. That will give them the No. 3 seed for the GSAC Tournament. They will face the yet to be decided No. 6 seed in the quarterfinals of the tournament on April 16 at 9 a.m. at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, California.
