INDIAN WELS, Calif. – The OUAZ men's tennis team lost to No. 12 Arizona Christian, 5-2, on Thursday in the championship of the GSAC Tournament at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. It was the Spirit's first appearance in the tournament in their first season as a member of the conference.
OUAZ (11-6) fell behind early as they only got one of the three doubles points. That came from the No. 1 pair of
Eduardo Couto and
Andres Reyes in an 8-5 victory. The No. 2 pair of
Leonardo Couto and
Noel Maurin fell 7-2 in a tiebreak.
Needing four wins from the six singles matches, the Spirit were quickly behind 4-1 as they fell in both the No. 6 and No. 1 matches. L.Couto would get a point back for the Spirit with his 6-4, 6-1 win in the No. 3 match.
The match ended when Reyes had to retire in the No. 2 match. He was trailing 4-6, 2-3 when he couldn't continue. Once that match was complete, the remaining matches were halted.
The Spirit were trailing in the two remaining matches at the time of completion.
OUAZ will now wait for an official invitation to next month's NCCAA National Championship that will be held in Mobile, Alabama from May 7-10. Earlier today the Spirit were ranked No. 2 in the NCCAA Top 10 Poll that was released.
