MOBILE, Ala. – The OUAZ men's tennis team had an impressive debut at the NCCAA National Championship by securing a 5-3 win over the tournament's No. 1 seed and NAIA 18th-ranked Campbellsville on Monday at the Mobile Tennis Center.
OUAZ (12-7) – the No. 2 seed in the four-team field – put themselves in a good position for a win by earning all three points from doubles play. The No. 1 pair of
Eduardo Couto and
Andres Reyes scored the first points with an 8-4 decision.
Leonardo Couto and
Noel Maurin won the No. 2 doubles match 8-5 while
Austin Todd and
Jordan Petrie completed the sweep with an 8-6 win in the No. 3 match.
Needing two points in singles action to pull the upset, the Spirit got off to a tough start as Campbellsville (16-8) won three of the first four matches to finish. The lone win in that stretch for OUAZ came from Maurin in the No. 4 match, 6-4, 6-2.
With the lead now down to 4-3, Reyes delivered the clinching point with his 7-6, 6-3 win in the No. 2 match.
Pool play action continues Tuesday when the Spirit face No. 3-seed Judson at 8 a.m. The Eagles are also 1-0 after a 5-0 win over No. 4-seed Cedarville on Monday. Tuesday's winner will be alone atop the pool heading into Wednesday's final day of pool play.
