THE AGENDA
The OUAZ softball team is back in Arizona where they will host three doubleheaders this week. The action begins on Wednesday with a non-conference series against Carroll College that begins at 4 p.m. Golden State Athletic Conference action resumes on Friday with two games against No. 9 Hope International at 1:30 p.m. The Spirit then host No. 14 Vanguard on Saturday at noon.
All three doubleheaders will be played at Willow Canyon High School. The softball field is located behind the tennis courts on the south side of the school. Admission is free and fans are encouraged to park in the lot near the tennis courts.
OUAZ will broadcast all six games live on the NAIA Network and the OUAZ Game Central portal. The NAIA Network is available on Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, and Roku devices by searching NAIA. ABOUT THE SPIRIT
OUAZ returns home with a 2-10 overall record and seventh in the GSAC with an 0-3 mark in conference play. They were swept in three games last Friday, falling twice at Menlo and then losing at William Jessup. The Spirit are 2-4 at home this season.
The Spirit will be back on the field batting .279 as a team while possessing a .726 OPS. They are scoring 4.58 runs per game. OUAZ has tallied 14 doubles, one triple, and one home run while drawing 45 walks with 32 strikeouts. They have gone 14 of 18 in stolen base attempts.
In the circle, the OUAZ staff has a 6.44 earned run average (ERA) with 75 innings pitched. The opposition is batting .345 with 33 extra base hits, including six home runs. They have thrown three complete games and posted 49 strikeouts and 49 walks.
Defensively, the Spirit have committed 25 errors while posting a .928 field percentage. They are yet to turn a double play and have a .657 stolen base against percentage.
AT THE PLATE
Emily Stebbins leads the Spirit with her .371 batting average and 1.063 OPS. She also leads the team with 13 hits, five doubles, one home run, and is tied for the lead with nine RBI. Stebbins went 11 for 26 (.423) during an 8-game hitting streak that was snapped against William Jessup. The streak is tied for the second longest hitting streak in team history.
Amanda Almond has hits in four of her last 10 at bats to raise her season batting average to .344. She is second on the team with 11 hits and is tied for the lead with nine RBI. Almond has one double and three walks with six runs scored.
Miranda Davis went 3 for 7 last Friday and she is hitting .294 on the season. She has 10 hits that includes one double and one triple with six RBI and nine runs scored. Davis ranks third in the GSAC with nine stolen bases while also drawing nine walks.
Ashton Aggers also has 10 hits on the year and she is batting .286. She has scored four runs and driven in two with six walks. Aggers is second on the team with three stolen bases.
Caitlyn Swisher has her average up to .353 with a 1.019 OPS in just 17 at bats. She has also drawn a team-best 10 base on balls. Swisher has one double and five RBI.
IN THE CIRCLE
Bailey Coronado leads the team with nine appearances (three starts) and 26.2 innings pitched. She has an 0-3 record and 5.51 ERA with opponents hitting .330. Coronado is third in the GSAC with 21 strikeouts and her 5.51 strikeouts per game average.
Sabrina Jimenez has gone 0-5 with a 5.60 ERA in her seven appearances (four starts) in the circle. She has thrown one complete game and has 13 strikeouts in 25 innings of work. Opponents are batting .330 off Jimenez with 14 extra base hits.
Alexandra McCutcheon leads the team with five starts while making eight appearances. She is 1-2 with an 8.86 ERA and 15 strikeouts while opponents are hitting .383.
Serenida Marquez has made three appearances with a 1-0 record and 3.50 ERA.
SERIES NOTES
Carroll swept two games from the Spirit last season in Surprise.Â
The Royals swept a pair of doubleheaders against the Spirit last season, including 13-4 and 11-0 wins in Surprise.
The Lions defeated OUAZ 13-4 at a neutral site in February of last season in the only other meeting between the two teams.
LOOKING AHEAD
OUAZ will also play three doubleheaders next week with a home series against Roosevelt on March 14. They then play at Saint Katherine on March 15 before a GSAC series at San Diego Christian on March 16.
