SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ baseball team dropped another two games to No. 23 Vanguard on Saturday afternoon at Surprise Stadium. The Spirit went down in the first game 9-3 and then dropped the series finale 2-0.
GAME 1
OUAZ got a solo home run from
Derek Hayenga in the fourth inning to get back within 3-1 in the opener. Vanguard quickly responded with a 3-run fifth and 2-run sixth on their way to the win. The Spirit would tack on a couple of unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth to provide the final margin.
Rylan Collins tallied three of the Spirit's 10 hits in the game. Hayenga and
Chuck Steele each had two hits with Hayenga's homer the only extra base hit for the team.
Miguel Cirino (1-3) tied a school record with 10 strikeouts, but he issued three walks, allowed six hits, and hit a batter in surrendering six runs (five earned) in 4.2 innings.
GAME 2
Zack McLeod (3-3) held Vanguard to two runs (one earned) on eight hits in 5.1 innings on the mound, but the Spirit offense managed just three hits in being shutout for the second time in the series.
Hayenga, Steele, and
Race Traynor recorded the team's three hits. The Spirit left a pair of runners in scoring position in the bottom of the fifth inning in what was their best chance at scoring in the game.
UP NEXT
OUAZ will host a non-conference game against Benedictine Mesa on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The field location will be announced on Monday.
