MESA, Ariz. – The OUAZ baseball team dropped a non-conference game at No. 19 Benedictine Mesa 10-5 on Tuesday afternoon at Gene Autry Park.
Race Traynor delivered a 2-run single to left in the top of the fourth inning to put OUAZ (17-13) in front 2-1. Benedictine Mesa (26-7) answered with five runs in the bottom of the frame to open a 6-1 advantage they never relinquished.
The Spirit would add a run in the fifth inning on an RBI from
Esteban Martinez. Traynor added an RBI triple in the eighth inning and then scored on a single by
Hayden Durkiewicz to complete the scoring for the Spirit.
Traynor joined
Chandler Reynard and
Fernando Lugo with two hits in the game as the Spirit totaled nine as a team. Lugo and Salazar each had a double.
Travis Hawkins started the game on the hill and allowed one run in two innings.
Dylan Chelini (0-1) took the loss after giving up five runs (four earned) in 1.2 innings.
Zachary Humphrey threw two scoreless innings.
The Spirit will now get set to host No. 23 Vanguard in a GSAC series this Friday and Saturday at Surprise Stadium. The first game on Friday begins at noon.
