OUAZ Wins Twice at Saint Katherine for First Doubleheader Sweep

ENCINITAS, Calif. – The OUAZ softball team swept a doubleheader for the first time in program history with two wins over Saint Katherine on Saturday in non-conference action. OUAZ rallied back to win the first game 11-8 and then took game two, 6-2.

This is the first time this season the Spirit have won consecutive games and just the second time in program history. They are now 6-18 on the season.

GAME 1
The teams would trade the lead back-and-forth in the opener with Saint Katherine leading 8-7 thorough five innings. OUAZ went ahead for good in the sixth inning when Vanessa Rodarte hit a 3-run home run to left field for a 10-8 lead. She would tie a school record an inning later with her fourth RBI on a single to make it 11-8.

Rodarte finished the game with three hits to lead a 14-hit attack from OUAZ. The top three in the Spirit order – Miranda Davis, Caitlyn Swisher, and Sydney Saxton Siaki – all had two hits and finished 6 for 14 with five RBI, six runs scored, and a double apiece. Ashton Aggers also had two hits.

Swisher hit a 2-run homer in the fourth inning.

Alexandra McCutcheon went the first four innings in the circle where she allowed eight runs (seven earned) on 12 hits with five strikeouts. Bailey Coronado earned the win by allowing just two hits with three strikeouts in the final three innings.

GAME 2
The Spirit scored three times in the top of the third and never gave the lead back to complete the sweep. Davis opened the scoring with an RBI double and then she scored on a single from Saxton. Alicia Young doubled in a run in the fourth inning to extend the lead after the Firebirds scored twice in their half of the third.

OUAZ totaled 10 hits in the win with four players having two hits. Davis was one of the four as she extended her hitting streak to 10 straight games. Emily Stebbins had a pair of RBI.
