Steele Wins No. 100 as OUAZ Sweeps Two Matches

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ men's volleyball team swept a pair of home matches on Friday and in the process OUAZ Head Coach Kyle Steele earned his 100th career victory. The day started with the Spirit sweeping Menlo in a non-conference match and ended with a 3-0 sweep of Westcliff for the milestone victory.
 
With the two wins, OUAZ has now won six straight matches and they are 12-6 on the season.
 
In his fifth season as a collegiate head coach, Steele now has a career record of 100-41. He is 27-16 as the men's coach at OUAZ after going 73-25 in three seasons as the head coach of the women's team at Oklahoma City University.
 
MATCH 1
For the second time this month the Spirit picked up a home win over Menlo (8-9). In the 25-13, 25-19, 25-23 win, OUAZ racked up 35 kills and hit .419. They held the Oaks to only 28 kills and used an 11-0 edge in blocks to keep the visitors to .096 hitting.
 
James Yahner, Chris Nero, and Jacob Smith each had seven kills in the win to lead the Spirit. Yahner hit .500 and Smith hit .429.
 
Colin Donisthorpe added four kills and five blocks while Bryan Ilena had three kills and four blocks. Joaquin Santa Cruz finished with 12 digs and Quentin Campbell had two service aces.
 
MATCH 2
The offense continued to roll in the 25-18, 25-15, 25-18 win over Westcliff. OUAZ posted 37 kills on .360 hitting in the match. They held the Warriors to only 22 kills on .086 hitting behind seven blocks and 27 digs. The Spirit also had a 6-0 edge in aces.
 
Smith tallied 11 kills on .444 hitting to lead the team. Yahner hit .833 with five kills and Brandon Davis also had five kills.
 
Donisthorpe added another four blocks and Santa Cruz added nine digs.
 
UP NEXT
OUAZ will look to extend their winning streak on Saturday when they host UC Merced in a GSAC match at 7 p.m. at Willow Canyon High School.
