SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ men's tennis team continued to make noise in the Golden State Athletic Conference after claiming a 9-0 win over No. 23 Westmont on Friday afternoon at the Surprise Tennis Complex.
The win is the second this season for OUAZ (3-3, 2-1 GSAC) over a nationally ranked opponent. It is also the team's first-ever sweep of a GSAC dual.
The Spirit got off to a fast start by taking all three doubles matches.
Austin Todd and
Peter Hariri earned an 8-4 win in the No. 3 match while the No. 1 team of
Leonardo Couto and
Eduardo Couto and the No. 2 team of
Andres Reyes and
Noel Maurin each won their matches by scores of 8-5.
E.Couto put the Spirit in from 4-0 when he won the No. 2 singles match 6-1, 6-4. L.Couto secured the team's victory by taking the No. 1 match 6-0, 7-5.
Wins in the No. 3 match from Reyes (6-4, 6-2) and the No. 4 match by
Dong Hyun Kim (7-6, 4-1 retired) pushed the Spirit to a 7-0 lead. The No. 5 and No. 6 matches each went to a tiebreaker with Todd and
Eric De Romas winning those tiebreaks, 10-6.
The Spirit will look for consecutive conference wins on Saturday when they host Marymount California in a dual that starts at 1 p.m. at the Surprise Tennis Complex.
