SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ baseball team rallied with single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to secure a 5-4 win and two-game sweep of Okanagan on Wednesday night at Royals Field No. 6 at Surprise Stadium.
OUAZ (5-3) recorded the first walkoff win in school history when
Adrian Salazar reached on an error by the Okanagan (1-6) first baseman that allowed
Chuck Steele to score from third. Salazar had scored the tying run in the bottom of the eighth on a throwing error by the Coyotes second baseman.
The key inning for the Spirit came in the top of the eighth when
Travis Turner entered the game with the bases loaded and nobody out. He then proceeded the strikeout the next three hitters to hold Okanagan lead at 4-3.
After OUAZ tied the game in the bottom of the eighth, Turner worked a scoreless ninth to earn his second win of the season. He began the ninth with a pair of strikeouts to have his season start by striking out the first nine batters he faced.
The Spirit used seven pitchers in the game and the group combined to record a school record 16 strikeouts.
Zachary Humphrey started the game with three perfect innings that included six strikeouts.
Steele and
Chandler Reynard each picked up two hits to tally a second straight multi-hit game.
Esteban Martinez also had a pair of hits while adding an RBI.
Juan Navarrete recorded the team's other RBI in the game.
Sam Haney used an eighth-inning single to extend his hitting streak to seven games.
OUAZ will remain at home to host a three-game series against Bethesda that starts on Friday at 6 p.m. on Royals Field No. 6 at Surprise Stadium.
