OUAZ Opens Conference against a Pair of Nationally Ranked Foes

MEN'S BASKETBALL NOTES
• The OUAZ men's basketball team opens Golden State Athletic Conference play this week with a pair of home games in Faith Arena. They begin the week against No. 22 Westmont on Thursday, December 5, at 7 p.m. The Spirit will then host No. 2 The Master's on Saturday, December 7, at 2 p.m.

• OUAZ will begin their second season in the GSAC with a 3-3 overall record and coming off a 79-59 home win last Saturday against Westcliff. The team is 2-1 at home on the season and in the middle of a four-game homestand.

• The Spirit are 0-2 all-time against Westmont with both meetings coming last season. The Warriors needed a buzzer-beater to escape with a 77-74 win in Surprise last season.

• The Master's also leads the all-time series against OUAZ 2-0 with a pair of wins last season. The Mustangs won last year's game in Surprise 99-72.

• OUAZ will enter the week's acition leading the NAIA by shooting 79.0 percent at the foul line. They have shot 81 percent or better at the stripe four times this season and been above 90 percent on two of those occasions.

• The Spirit are also among the NAIA leaders in shooting from 3-point range where they make 43.0 percent. They are averaging 6.67 makes from beyond the arc per game which ranks 10th in the conference.

• Behind their 48.3 percent shooting from the field – 25th in the NAIA – OUAZ is scoring 85.67 points per game which places them 27th in the country in the latest rankings.

• OUAZ has been sharing the ball this season to an average of 16.0 assists per game which ranks 31st in the country. They currently rank 30th with a 1.067 assist-to-turnover ratio.

• The current NAIA rankings have the Spirit 12th in steals per game with their 9.83 average. The team has recorded at least five steals in every game and they have twice recorded at least 14 steals in a game.

DOING MOORE
• Dimetres Moore started the season with five straight games of 20-plus points before scoring 19 in the win over Westcliff on Saturday. That stretch included a 35-point outing against Benedictine Mesa on November 16.

• Moore has recorded a pair of double-doubles with at least five rebounds in every contest. He currently ranks fourth in the NAIA in scoring at 25.33 points per game while sitting 30th by averaging 8.00 rebounds per outing.

• He also leads the NAIA at 3.50 steals per game having three-plus steals in a game five times. Moore is 42nd nationally by shooting 47.4 percent from beyond the arc.

• Moore narrowly missed the first triple-double in program history against Embry-Riddle when he recorded 24 points, 10 rebounds, and a school record nine steals. Those nine steals are the most by a player in the Golden State Athletic Conference since the 2010-11 season.

LAY DOWN THE LAW-SON
• Shazier Lawson is scoring 14.3 points per game and he is shooting 48.3 percent from the field. Lawson has scored in double figures five times and he had a season-best 22 against Embry-Riddle on November 9.

• Lawson has three of double-doubles and he is 13th in the NAIA by grabbing 9.67 total rebounds and 7.00 defensive rebounds per game.

DIMES WITH CAREY
• Brian Carey has scored in double figures in every game and has consecutive 20-point outings that includes a career-high 32 against Westcliff on Saturday.

• He is 33rd in the country by scoring 17.67 points per game and 34th by shooting 84.4 percent at the foul line.

• Carey has recorded at least four assists in every game and set a school record with 10 dimes against Embry-Riddle on November 9. He ranks fifth in the NAIA by averaging 7.17 assists per game and 18th with 43 total assists.

ABOUT NO. 22 WESTMONT
• Westmont comes to Surprise at 8-0 on the season to move from unranked to No. 22 in the NAIA Coaches' Poll. They are 2-0 in road games.

• The Warriors are among the top shooting teams in the NAIA where they shoot 53.2 percent from the field and 43.5 percent from three to rank fourth in the NAIA in each category.

ABOUT NO. 2 THE MASTER'S
• The Master's has begun the season with seven straight wins to maintain their No. 2 national ranking. They have not played a true road game and are 1-0 at a neutal site.

• The Mustangs are outscoring their opponents by 22.29 points per game and holding opponents to 37.2 percent shooting.
