OUAZ MEN'S BASKETBALL NOTES
• The OUAZ men's basketball team plays their final two countable games of 2019 over the next few days during the Cactus Classic that is being played at Chandler-Gilbert Community College in Chandler, Ariz. The Spirit will begin by facing Montana Western on Saturday at 6 p.m. and then play Lethbridge on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
• OUAZ makes its third appearance at the Cactus Classic with a 4-5 overall record this season and coming off a 137-75 home win over SAGU American Indian College. The Spirit are 1-2 in road games this season, and are yet to play at a neutral site.
• Both of the games on their Cactus Classic agenda will mark the first-ever meeting against the opponent.
• The Spirit have gone 1-3 all-time in games played at the Cactus Classic after dropping both games played at the event last season.

• Coming off their school record 137 points against SAGU on Tuesday, OUAZ now ranks 12th in the NAIA in scoring average at 91.11 points per game. They have scored at least 75 points in every game this season with four 90-point outings, including twice reaching 100-plus points.
• The Spirit have seen their scoring average rise behind their 51.3 percent shooting from the floor. They currently rank ninth in the NAIA in field goal percentage by shooting above 50 percent in a game four times, including a school record 66.2 percent against SAGU.
• OUAZ also ranks fifth in the country by making 75.8 percent at the foul line. The team has converted at least 74 percent from the stripe six times this season.
• After setting the school record with 36 assists on Tuesday, OUAZ is now 24th in the NAIA by averaging 17.00 assists per game. They are also 29th in the nation with their 1.093 assist-to-turnover ratio and 15th with a 3.56 turnover margin.
• While the offense has been much of the story this season, OUAZ is 13th nationally by getting 9.78 steals per game. The Spirit have recorded 10-plus steals in a game four times and twice have taken 15 steals.
NOTES ON MOORE
• In nine games played this season,
Dimetres Moore has scored 20-plus points seven times. He currently ranks fourth in the NAIA by scoring 24.33 points per game while shooting 51.2 percent from the field.
• Moore is also averaging 7.2 rebounds per game and he has recorded three double-doubles. His 2.44 offensive rebounds per game is good for 45th in the NAIA at this time.
• He has also recorded multiple steals in a game seven times this season to currently lead the NAIA with his 3.44 steals per game average.
• Moore narrowly missed the first triple-double in program history against Embry-Riddle when he recorded 24 points, 10 rebounds, and a school record nine steals. Those nine steals are the most by a player in the Golden State Athletic Conference since the 2010-11 season.
FIRST TO 1,000
• Moore is looking to become the first 1,000-point scorer in program history this season. In 55 games played for OUAZ over two-plus seasons, Moore has scored 673 points to rank second in program history.
• He needs 104 points to pass
Tanner Riley to become the school's all-time scoring leader with 777 career points.
• Moore needs to average 17.2 points per game over the final 19 games of the regular season to reach 1,000 career points
NOTES ON CAREY
•
Brian Carey has been a scoring threat of late with at least 20 points in five straight games to move him to 16th in the NAIA at 20.00 points per game.
• Carey has scored in double figures in every game this season and seen his scoring average rise by 6.5 points per game during the current five-game scoring binge.
• In the nine games this season, Carey has distributed at least four assists eight times and had at least six assists in six games. He sits sixth in the NAIA at 6.22 assists per game and 11th with 56 total assists.
• His season includes a double-double of 19 points and 10 assists in the Faith Arena opener against Embry-Riddle. At the time, it was the first 10-plus assist game in program history.
NOTES ON LAWSON
•
Shazier Lawson averages 15.3 points per game and he has scored in double figures eight times. He shoots 53.5 percent from the field overall and has been above 50 percent in a game six times.
• Lawson leads the Spirit by grabbing 9.0 rebounds per game where he ranks 14th in the NAIA. His 6.67 defensive rebounds per game is 15th in the nation.
• Lawson has recorded three double-doubles on the season which is tied for the most in the GSAC at the moment.
NOTES ON SIMMONS
•
Elijah Simmons has played in eight games (seven starts) for the Spirit this season and is scoring 12.1 points per game. He has scored in double figures in six of those outings.
• Simmons is shooting 61.8 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from beyond the arc.
• He scored a career-high 20 points while grabbing seven rebounds against Westmont on December 5.
ABOUT MONTANA WESTERN
• Montana Western heads to the Cactus Classic at 5-5 overall this season and looking to snap a two-game losing streak.
• The Bulldogs are scoring 82.20 points per game to rank 39th in the NAIA and they are second nationally with a 1.736 assist-to-turnover ratio.
• James Jones leads the team in scoring at 19.50 points per game – 18th in the country – and he is 35th in the NAIA by getting 4.20 assists per game.
ABOUT LETHBRIDGE
• Lethbridge will make the trip to Arizona from Canada with a 9-9 overall record and 3-7 in the Canada West. They have currently lost three straight games.
• The Pronghorns are scoring 85.5 points per game in their 10 CWUAA games while shooting 43.5 percent as a team.
• Chad Oviatt leads the team in scoring at 14.8 points per game while four other players are averaging double figures.
LOOKING AHEAD
• After their two games at the Cactus Classic, OUAZ will take some time off for the holidays. The Spirit return to action on December 28 in an exhibition game at California Baptist.
