GILBERT, Ariz. – In the first-ever meeting against their newest in-state rival, the OUAZ men's basketball team went cold for stretch of the second half and fell the Park Gilbert, 86-75, on Thursday night at the San Tan Charter School.
The decisive run took place over a three minute, 21 second span in which OUAZ (2-3) was outscored 14-3. The run turned a game that was tied at 52-52 into a 66-55 lead for Park Gilbert (2-6) with 10:47 to play.
OUAZ used an 8-2 burst late in the half to close the deficit 75-70 with 3:58 to play before the Buccaneers were able to close out the win by holding the Spirit to only five points the rest of the game.
The Spirit shot 45.3 percent from the field with 48 points in the paint, but they went 3 of 13 from beyond the arc. Park made 48.5 percent overall and 11 of 23 from three.
Dimetres Moore and
Shazier Lawson each had a double-double for the Spirit. Moore finished with 28 points and 10 rebounds while Lawson went for 17 points and 10 boards.
Brian Carey added 20 points and eight assists.
OUAZ will now have a short break from games for Thanksgiving before returning to action against Westcliff on Saturday, November 30, at 2 p.m. at Faith Arena.
