The OUAZ women's basketball team got its second crack at an NCAA Division I opponent on Wednesday night. While the final score did not finish in favor of the Sprit, it was still a great opportunity to gain valuable experience.
Natasa Radovic had her second consecutive double-double, and
Taylor Davis had another strong evening with 16 points and nine rebounds in a 103-75 loss to California Baptist on Tuesday night. As the game is an exhibition, it will not count against the record for OUAZ.
The Spirit had a rough first quarter defensively, as they gave up 40 points to the Lancers on 58% shooting. The Spirt then locked it down on the defensive end, never giving up more than 22 points in a quarter in the final three frames. They even held CBU to 25% shooting from the floor in the second quarter, allowing only 19 more points before halftime.
While the Spirit were able to contain the Lancers before halftime, OUAZ could not get the offense started. They had a cold stretch in the second quarter, shooting 2-21, with seven of its 12 points in the quarter coming via free throw.
The second half was much closer, as the Spirit were outscored only 44-40 in the final 20 minutes. They also got to the free throw line a little more after halftime, as they had 18 attempts in the second half compared to the 14 in the first.
This was the last exhibition game against an NCAA Division I opponent until December 28 when they take on Utah Valley. The Spirit now return to Surprise and play its Faith Arena debut on Saturday when they host Benedictine-Mesa. Tipoff is scheduled for Noon Arizona time.
