The OUAZ women's basketball team got its first crack at an NCAA Division 1 opponent on Friday. While they hung with Southern Utah throughout the first half, the Spirit had a tough time keeping up in the final 20 minutes.
The Thunderbirds outscored the Spirit 48-20 in the second half to wrap up a 104-59 victory. Southern Utah had five players score in double digits.
The Spirit came out of the gates hot, grabbing a 9-4 lead. The Thunderbirds slowly took over, but the game stayed close for most of the first half.
The Spirit shot 6-9 from 3PT range in the first half as well. Free throw shooting was spectacular as well, as the team put down 24 of its 26 chances.
OUAZ was led offensively by
Taylor Davis and
Natasa Radovic, who each scored 15 points.
Kate Sokolova also scored in double figures as she poured in 11.
The Spirit's next contest is seven days from now, as they will take on SAGU American Indian College on November 8. Tipoff from Phoenix is scheduled for 5:00pm.
