SURPRISE, Ariz. - The OUAZ men's soccer team had bad luck in its most recent GSAC game, and were looking to get back on the right track against cross-town rival Arizona Christian on Saturday. The Spirit's goals did not come from the usual suspects, but the offense was still effective.
OUAZ got first half goals from Mauricio Ochoa and Josias Cruz, and locked down defensively to hold off ACU to pick up a 2-1 victory at Spirit Field. The high production guys like Cristian Gennaro and Samuel George were kept out of the goal and assist column, but that is almost an added bonus for the OUAZ squad.
"If we can keep getting goals from a lot of different people, we become really hard to scout," OUAZ head coach Matt Gow said. "As long as we keep doing that, we have some guys that are dynamic to score goals."
Despite giving up a goal right before halftime, the Spirit came back out in the final 45 and limited the Firestorm's chances. OUAZ has held its opponents to one goal or less in five of the last seven games. Goalkeeper Yuri Nascimento made four saves in the win.
"We limited [ACU] to pretty few opportunities in the second half as far as quality opportunities, " Gow said. "For our guys to be able to go into a conference game, up a goal, with 45 minutes left to play, and come out with the one goal lead, it showed that we did what we needed to defensively."
OUAZ heads to Northern California for its first conference road test of the season. They will take on Menlo on Thursday and then head over to William Jessup on Saturday. The journey is a long one, and the team will take the next week to prepare for the test.
"Both teams have proven they can win games in the conference, so it's two hard games that we are going to have to go into," Gow said.
