EL CAJON, Calif. – The OUAZ men's basketball team overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to win at San Diego Christian 84-79 on Saturday evening to record the program's first-ever Golden State Athletic Conference victory.
OUAZ (3-10, 1-3 GSAC) scored 52 points in the second half to rally from the 42-32 halftime margin. The turned the tide with a 16-4 run that saw them turn a 48-40 deficit into a 56-52 lead with 11:33 to play. The Spirit would hold that advantage the rest of the game despite San Diego Christian (5-8, 1-3) pulling within one possession on three occasions.
The final of those came with 2:40 remaining and OUAZ leading 74-73. The Spirit then mounted an 8-2 run to extend the cushion to seven where they could make free throws down the stretch to earn the historic victory.
OUAZ had three players score in double figures as they shot 51.5 percent from the field for the game sparked by 58.3 percent in the second half. The totaled 18 assists against just eight turnovers while scoring 48 points in the paint.
Dimetres Moore led the way with 25 points for his fourth 20-point outing of the season. He scored 19 of his points in the second half and finished the game shooting 11 of 14.
Brian King Jr. added 19 points, eight rebounds, and five assists.
Marcus Williams hit four 3-pointers to help him score 18 points while getting seven assists and four steals.
The Spirit held San Diego Christian to 42.6 percent shooting. GSAC leading scorer Derek Novsek led the Hawks on Saturday with 26.
Saturday's win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Spirit as they completed the second of four straight conference games on the road. They are back in action on Thursday when they visit Hope International at 8:30 p.m. MST.
