Spirit Snap Slide and Complete Season Sweep of the Hawks

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ women's basketball team had four players score in double figures as they snapped a four-game losing streak with a 78-65 win over San Diego Christian on Thursday night at Willow Canyon High School.

With the win, OUAZ (9-10, 3-9 GSAC) records its first-ever season sweep of a Golden State Athletic Conference opponent after the Spirit defeated San Diego Christian (7-16, 1-10) earlier this month on the road.

It wasn't the best start to the game on Thursday as the Spirit trailed 13-6 with 2:29 to play in the third quarter. That would change over the next five-plus minutes as OUAZ went on a 19-2 run in which they went 8 of 11 shots with three 3-pointers. They held the Hawks without a basket during the stretch in building a lead they never relinquished.

Eventually the Spirit lead would balloon to 18 early in the fourth quarter. San Diego Christian would get as close as eight on three different occasions on the quarter, but the Spirit had an answer to get in back to double digits each time.

Jorie Mayfield led the way with a season-high 21 points on 9 of 17 shooting and a pair of 3-pointers. She also grabbed 10 rebounds to notch her fourth double-double of the season. The 21 points are one shy of her career high set last season.

OUAZ shot 44.4 percent as a team in the win and they connected on 10 of 2 from beyond the arc. The 10 threes are the second most they have made in a game this season while the 45.5 percent from deep is the second-high in school history.

Alexis Smith hit a pair of those triples to help her finish the game with 17 points to go with seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Bailey Osmer added 16 points, nine rebounds, and three assists to her two threes. Elizabeth Garcia had 14 points and four assists.

The Spirit held a 41-38 advantage on the boards, and they totaled 13 assists and just 12 turnovers. They held the Hawks to 36.7 percent overall and forced them into 13 turnovers.

Hannah Myers led the Hawks with 23 points and 12 rebounds.

OUAZ now has a day off before hosting No. 8 Vanguard on Saturday at noon at Willow Canyon High School.
