SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The OUAZ men's basketball team had little answer for a fifth-ranked The Master's squad that is battling for a regular season championship in the Golden State Athletic Conference as the Mustangs downed the Spirit 103-77.
OUAZ (3-16, 1-9 GSAC) had the game tied at 7-7 early when The Master's (19-3, 8-2) dropped an 18-2 run over the next six minutes to build a 25-9 lead. After the Spirit pulled back within eight with 6:47 to play in the half, the Mustangs closed the half with a 21-9 run to lead by 20 at halftime where it remained for all but two possessions of the second half.
The Spirit shot 43.7 percent from the field in the game while hitting 10 times from beyond the arc. They scored 36 points in the paint and got out for 16 fast break points. What they couldn't slow was the 54.4 percent shooting and 13 threes of the Mustangs.
Marcus Williams and
Dimetres Moore each had 16 points for the Spirit with
Tanner Riley adding 15. Williams had four 3-pointers and six assists while Riley added three triples and seven rebounds.
OUAZ recorded 16 assists with 14 turnovers while grabbing 32 rebounds. TMU collected 44 rebounds and had 46 points in the paint.
Hansel Atencia scored 21 points to lead five Mustangs in double figures.
The Spirit now return home where they will play five of the next six and six of the final nine games. The first of those games comes on Thursday when they welcome San Diego Christian to Willow Canyon High School.
